GREEN ISLE ENVIRONMENTAL SERVICES ANNOUNCES EPA'S WITHDRAWAL OF STATEMENT ON DISPOSAL OF CO-MINGLED RDF ASH

HOPKINS, Minn., Nov. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Green Isle Environmental Services, Inc. announced that the Federal EPA had acknowledged that they had "acted prematurely" and issued a letter withdrawing its Oct. 8 statement, indicating that ash from co-mingled coal and refuse derived fuel had to be disposed of in a landfill designed to accept mixed Municipal Solid Waste, while they conduct further study of this issue.
James Taylor, president and chief executive officer, said, "This clarification from the Federal EPA has resulted in our South Dakota customer to resume accepting shipments of our fuel pellets." Taylor added, "The October 8th statement by the Federal EPA had been particularly frustrating because federally financed tests of the fuel pellets had demonstrated repeatedly that ash and emissions from the combustion of the fuel pellets was consistently better than the residue from the burning of coal alone." Taylor noted, "The Federal EPA is expected to conduct further study of this issue and until then management of ash from the co-firing of coal with small amounts of refuse derived fuel would be the responsibility of the States under the applicable Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations." Taylor stated, "Fuel pellet combustion and related ash disposal by our customer in South Dakota has always been in compliance with these regulations."
Headquartered in Hopkins, the company owns and operates a waste processing and recycling facility in Eden Prairie, Minn., and manages a recycling and composting facility in Pembroke Pines, Fla. The company also manufactures machined medical products, computer disk drive spindles, other machined items and plastic refuse containers.
