GREEN FLAG JOY AT CHAVASSE PARK; Sefton and Stanley Park keep status too.

LIVERPOOL ONE shopping centre's Chavasse Park has won a Green Flag for the first time in a record-breaking year for the Keep Britain Tidy-led scheme.

More than 1,400 UK parks and green spaces have been given a "Green Flag Award" recognising quality public areas.

Around 800 volunteer judges visited sites and judged them on eight criteria, including cleanliness, sustainability and conservation.

In Liverpool, Sefton and Stanley Parks are also rated among the UK's best spaces.

They can now fly the Green Flag as a sign to visitors that they boast the highest possible standards, are beautifully maintained and have excellent facilities.

Cllr Peter Mitchell, Mayoral Lead on Parks and Open Spaces said: "We are absolutely delighted to retain Green Flag Awards for these outstanding parks.

"This award recognises that these parks are very high quality green space which are maintained to a very high standard "Both Sefton and Stanley parks have had considerable investment and are very well used."

A new name also attracted Green Flag status in Wirral.

Victoria Park in Rock Ferry is now one of 15 parks in the borough to receive the Green Flag Award.

As well as the growing Green Flag list, Tam O'Shanter Urban Farm has earned a Green Flag Community Award, which recognises high quality green spaces managed by voluntary and community groups, while Birkenhead Park retained its Green Heritage status in addition to its Green Flag.

Cllr Chris Meaden, cabinet member for Health and Wellbeing, said: "Wirral's parks and green spaces are absolutely crucial to how we as Wirral residents think about our area. We are increasingly seeing local communities becoming involved in partnership working with our Parks and Countryside Service and helping to develop and maintain our parks, and it is a credit to our staff, volunteers and Friends Groups to receive this recognition for their hard work."

Green Flag award scheme manager Paul Todd said: "We are thrilled to announce yet another record-breaking year."
