GREECE TO FLY MARTIN MARIETTA NIGHT VISION SYSTEMS

BETHESDA, Md., Jan. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Greek government will purchase 40 Martin Marietta LANTIRN night vision systems as part of a U.S. sale of F-16C/D fighter aircraft to the NATO nation. The order is valued in excess of $100 million to Martin Marietta (NYSE: ML).
LANTIRN, the Low Altitude Navigation and Targeting Infrared system for Night, enables fighter pilots to fly beneath enemy radar, in total darkness, at speeds exceeding 500 mph, and attack several targets on the first pass. LANTIRN consists of two pods, one for navigation, the other for targeting, that attach beneath the aircraft's fuselage.
Under the agreement with the Greek government, the Hellenic Air Force will receive 24 LANTIRN navigation pods and 16 targeting pods for deployment on the 40 F-16 aircraft included in the foreign military sale.
Martin Marietta expects to receive long-lead funding for the sale in April, and will provide the LANTIRN systems, associated maintenance test equipment, spare parts and training in 1996.
The latest order will bring Martin Marietta's international revenues from the LANTIRN system to more than $500 million.
LANTIRN was developed for the U.S. Air Force by Martin Marietta Electronics, Information & Missiles Group in Orlando, Florida, where the work will be performed. Currently, 1,350 Martin Marietta employees are assigned to the LANTIRN program.
The U.S. Air Force has purchased 561 navigation pods and 506 targeting pods, and used the system extensively during the Persian Gulf War.
The corporation's Electronics, Information & Missiles Group is a leading developer of advanced combat systems for the armed forces, and also provides computer equipment and information services to military and civil customers and builds automation equipment for the U.S. Postal Service.
