GREATER SEATTLE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON STEEL INDUSTRY
SEATTLE, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce:
WHAT: The fate of the American steel industry over the last
decade prompts images of the padlocked mills of Pittsburgh
and the surge of imports. The industry has gone through
some hard times and undergone massive restructuring, but
has emerged as a strong competitor in the 1990s. But
what will it take for the industry to remain competitive
over the next 10 years, especially in the face of intense
 foreign pressure?
WHO: Jim Todd, chairman and chief executive officer of
Birmingham Steel Co., parent company of Seattle's Salmon
Bay Steel, is the owner of one of the industry's major
success stories and a driving force behind the current
trend to specialize. Birmingham Steel is a publicly held,
$420-million company that operates four steel-producing,
non-union mini-mills. His company believes it is one of
the most efficient producers of steel and steel products
in the United States, due in part to its production
 techniques and cost controls.
 WHEN: Thursday, April 30, 12 to 1:30 p.m.
WHERE: Westin Hotel, Fifth Avenue Room, Seattle
