GREAT LAKES COMPLETES PURCHASE OF BAYROL
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Great Lakes Chemical

Corporation (NYSE: GLK) today announced the company has completed the purchase of Bayrol Chemische Fabrik GmbH, Europe's leading supplier of specialty chemicals and equipment to recreational water treatment markets. Sales for 1992 will exceed $50 million.
Emerson Kampen, chairman, president and CEO of Great Lakes, stated, "The addition of Bayrol provides a vital link to creating a global presence in the recreational water treatment market. Bayrol is well- positioned in fast-growing markets developing around the Mediterranean as well as those expected to emerge in Central and Eastern Europe. When coupled with Bio-Lab's operations centered around North America and Australia, we now have the means to access and serve every important region in the world."
Headquartered in Munich, Germany, Bayrol's operations include: manufacturing plants in Munich, and sales and distribution centers in France, Spain and Italy through wholly-owned subsidiaries. The company offers specialty chemicals primarily applied in swimming pools and spas for water disinfection. Its activities also encompass key dosing and control equipment for swimming pools plus a range of products used for disinfection in the food industry.
Kampen concluded, "Even though the immediate strategic and financial impact of this acquisition is impressive, we see even greater benefits in the future. Bayrol strengthens Great Lakes' ability to expand the use of its specialty bromine-based products throughout Europe. What's more, it will enable us to more rapidly commercialize globally the promising new biocides and other product technology that is being developed by the research groups of Bayrol, Bio-Lab and Great Lakes."
Great Lakes Chemical Corporation, a Fortune 500 company, is the world's leading producer of bromine, brominated chemicals and furfural derivatives for such applications as flame retardants, agriculture, oil and gas well completion fluids, water sanitizers and other specialty applications. The stock of the company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange.
