GREAT AMERICAN RACE'S FLINT STOP HELPS BUICK CELEBRATE 90TH BIRTHDAY

FLINT, Mich., June 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The Great American Race's overnight stop in Flint Tuesday (July 6) is part of Buick Motor Division's plan to provide home-town entertainment for Buick's 90th anniversary.
Visitors who congregate near the finish gate at the Saginaw Street bridge downtown will see nearly 100 vintage automobiles arrive following 6 p.m. ceremonies that include the U.S. Navy Ceremonial Band. The cross-country rally's pace car is a 1993 Buick 90th Anniversary LeSabre -- a Flint-built car that was the 5 millionth LeSabre produced.
There is no charge for watching the cars finish or seeing them up close in the parking lot of Flint's AutoWorld amusement center, where they will be displayed until dark.
And Buick has arranged for AutoWorld to be open to the public from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at a special price of only $3 (no charge for children age 5 and under), at the door.
AutoWorld's attractions (except the "dark rides") will be operating, including the movie, "Speed," on the huge IMAX screen.
A planned special attraction at the day's finish line will be several special Buicks leading the cars in downtown Flint. Among these rarely driven cars are a beautifully restored 1905 Model C, which is the fourth-oldest known Buick in existence and the first Buick sold in California, and Louis Chevrolet's 1910 Buick Bug racer.
Buick is sponsoring a dinner for Great Race contestants and their families in AutoWorld. The Flint Area Convention & Visitors Bureau is helping organize the Flint visit.
The Great American Race is billed as the world's greatest vintage car road rally. This is the 11th annual event and the fifth straight with Buick as official car and pace car. Nearly 100 vintage automobiles, dating from 1905 to 1941, left Huntington Beach, Calif., June 27.
The rally continues for 14 days, through 16 states, on a 4,250-mile course ending July 10 in Norfolk, Va.
Flint was an overnight stop once before, in 1990. Buick asked the Great Race's organizers to pay a return visit this year to help Buick celebrate its 90th anniversary. Buick Motor Co. was incorporated in Detroit in May of 1903 and moved to Flint later in the year. Buick became the cornerstone for the creation of General Motors in 1908.
There are several local events tied to the arrival of the national rally contestants. Local Buick Club of America members will line the streets to welcome the race. Area vintage car owners will participate in a "mini" Great Race throughout Genesee County beginning at 9 a.m. Tuesday in downtown Flint.
The local rally will be followed by a "Shine Time America" auto show featuring local racers and other classic autos. The display at the parking lot at Kearsley and S. Saginaw streets will include judging by area dignitaries, with the top winner entered in a drawing to be held in Norfolk for airline passes.
