GRANT JOINS CORTEX BOARD IRVINE, Calif., July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Cortex Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
(NASDAQ: CORX) today announced the appointment of James D. Grant to the company's board of directors. Grant, 59, is chairman, and from 1986 to 1992 was chief executive officer, of T Cell Sciences, Inc., a Cambridge, Mass.-based biotechnology pharmaceutical company. From 1972 to 1986 he was a vice president and corporate officer of CPC International Inc., a Fortune 100 multinational food industrial products company. From 1969 to 1972, Grant served as deputy commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, and was vice chairman of the advisory committee on the FDA (the "Edwards Committee") in 1990 and 1991.
"Jim's experience, both with the FDA and in the biopharmaceutical industry, will be of great benefit to Cortex as it continues to build on its technological foundation and begins to make the transition to a product-oriented company with internal clinical, regulatory and marketing functions," said Dr. Harvey Sadow, chairman of Cortex. Grant said, "I am impressed with the breadth and depth of technology at Cortex. The company is targeting major medical problems for which there are no currently available treatments, and has demonstrated, with its calpain inhibitors for stroke, that it has the ability to advance rapidly from concept to drug candidate. Grant holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the College of William and Mary, and he did postgraduate study at Stanford University on a Ford Foundation fellowship. He fills an existing vacancy on the board of directors.
