GRANITE CONSTRUCTION: CALIFORNIA CORRIDOR CONSTRUCTORS GETS GO AHEAD ON SAN JOAQUIN HILLS TOLLWAY

Watsonville, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Granite Construction Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: GCCO) announced today that California Corridor Constructors, a joint venture of Kiewit Pacific Co. and Granite Construction Co., has received a notice to proceed with design and construction of the San Joaquin Hills Corridor Tollway in Orange County, by the San Joaquin Hills Transportation Corridor Agency. The value of the project is approximately $744 million. Granite's share of the joint venture is 30 percent, or about $223 million, which will be added to the company's backlog this quarter.
The project entails final design and construction of a new, six-lane, 14.4-mile-long tollway with an 88-foot median set aside to accommodate high occupancy vehicle lanes and potential future transit systems. The new tollway is planned as an extension of State Route 73 from the John Wayne Airport area to San Juan Capistrano, between and parallel to Interstate 5 and the Pacific Coast Highway. The project includes the construction of 78 structures and the widening of approximately three miles of Interstate 5.
The project is scheduled to take four years to complete. Some construction activities could commence within the next several weeks, though the bulk of the work is expected to take place in the third and fourth years of the contract. California Corridor Constructors was awarded a design/build contract in September, 1991.
Granite Construction is one of the largest heavy civil contractors in the United States and is engaged in the construction of highways, dams, airports, mass transit facilities and other infrastructure-related projects. The company's stock is traded on the NASDAQ/National Market System under the symbol GCCO.
