 GRANDMET SECTOR ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT APPOINTMENTS
MINNEAPOLIS, Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Grand Metropolitan Food Sector

today announced two senior management appointments in its U.S.-based companies that are designed to increase brand leadership and strengthen its management resources.
Michael J. Paxton, 45, formerly president of the Pillsbury Baked Goods Division, has been named president and chief executive officer of Haagen-Dazs, the market leader in super-premium ice cream. He succeeds Ove Sorensen, who has resigned from the company. Paxton will report to Peter M. Thompson, joint chief operating officer, GrandMet Food Sector, and CEO, GrandMet Foods International.
 H. Robert Hawthorne, 46, formerly president and CEO of Alpo Petfoods, has been named president of Pillsbury Baked Goods, which manufactures and markets Pillsbury, Totino's and Jeno's brands. He reports to Paul S. Walsh, joint chief operating officer, GrandMet Food Sector, and CEO, Pillsbury.
Both appointments are effective Feb. 1, 1992. Hawthorne's replacement will be announced shortly.
Paxton is a 13-year veteran of Pillsbury, where he has held several senior marketing and general management positions. Earlier in his career, he held marketing positions with Miles Laboratories and Drackett Company, a subsidiary of Bristol Myers.
"Mike's broad experience in marketing and general management has prepared him well for Haagen-Dazs, a GrandMet brand with great international potential," Thompson said. "His experience with new products, particularly when Pillsbury launched a record 53 additions to the line in 1991, will be extremely valuable."
A graduate of the University of Cincinnati with a master's degree in marketing from the same school, Paxton will be based in Teaneck, N.J.
Hawthorne joined Pillsbury in 1986 as vice president of marketing, Pillsbury Canada. He became president and CEO of Pillsbury Canada in 1989 and president of Alpo in 1990. Earlier in his career, Hawthorne spent 15 years with General Mills.
"Rob's record at Alpo, combined with his knowledge of the Pillsbury brands, makes this an ideal fit for the growing baked goods division," said Walsh. "His experience in making Alpo a key player in cat food, as well as the recent introduction of a record 58 new Alpo products, prepares him well for continued growth at Pillsbury."
A graduate of Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Canada, Hawthorne will be based in Minneapolis.
Grand Metropolitan PLC, one of the largest international companies in the United Kingdom and a world leader in drinks, retailing and food, has sales of more than $15 billion. U.S. subsidiaries include Alpo Petfoods, Burger King, Carillon Importers, Haagen-Dazs, Heublein, The Paddington Corporation, Pearle, Inc., Pillsbury and GrandMet Foodservice USA.
