GRANDMET ACQUIRES LEADING EUROPEAN CAKE COMPANY AS A FURTHER STEP IN ITS
 EUROPEAN BAKED GOODS STRATEGY
MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Grand Metropolitan PLC today announced the acquisition of Bistrial, one of Europe's top cake producers with leading brands in France, Belgium and Italy, from Midial SA, a major French food manufacturer and retailer.
This move is the latest step in GrandMet's strategy to strengthen its position as the leading cake manufacturer in Europe.
Bistrial manufactures and markets a range of cakes and madeleines under the Colibri brand in France, and the Fida brand in Italy. Bistrial is Europe's largest manufacturer of waffles with the Suzy brand holding the number one market position in Belgium.
Ian Martin, chief operating officer and group managing director of Grand Metropolitan, and chief executive food sector commented:
"Bistrial will become part of GrandMet's European Baked Goods Division -- Brossard -- which already has a turnover of L200 million and comprises extensive businesses in ambient, chilled and frozen cakes. These include Gringoire Brossard, Vinchon-Jeannette and Brossard Surgeles in France, Driehoek in the Netherlands, Brossard in Belgium; Memory Lane, Fleur de Lys and Kaysens in the UK and Goldstein in Germany.
"This acquisition strengthens our position as the leading cake manufacturer in Europe. It provides entry into the Italian market and augments our presence in Belgium and in France where we already hold the number one market position with the Brossard brand."
Bistrial has production sites in France, Belgium and Italy employing approximately 550 full-time staff. In the year ending December 1991, Bistrial's turnover is estimated at L50 million.
The terms of the acquisition, which are not being disclosed, are not material to GrandMet's shareholders funds.
