GRAND CASINOS RECEIVES GO-AHEAD ON TUNICA-BILOXI CASINO SITE: COUSHATTA RESERVATION CASINO DELAYED PENDING TRUST RULING

MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Grand Casinos, Inc., (NASDAQ-NMS: GRND) announced today that the Tunica-Biloxi Tribe of Louisiana's gaming enterprise site has been taken into trust by the U.S. government, clearing the way for construction and opening of this new Indian gaming facility.
"We have finally overcome the last hurdle to getting this gaming enterprise open and operating -- to create jobs and bring much-needed economic development to this community," said Tom Brosig, president of Grand Casinos. "We are grateful to Tribal Chairman Earl Barbry, Sr., whose devoted efforts have made this historic event possible for the tribe."
Brosig said formal ground breaking ceremonies will be held in a few weeks at the site near Marksville, La. Opening is expected in late spring, 1994.
The company also announced suspension of construction at its second Indian Gaming site in Louisiana, due to uncertainty regarding a federal ruling on the site. Brosig said the Grand Casino Coushatta development is being held up while the U.S. Department of the Interior continues to consider whether to take the proposed site into trust.
"We hope any delays will be brief, but we believe it is prudent to curtail our efforts at this point," Brosig said. "We have received conflicting opinions from the federal government throughout the development process, and this has inhibited economic development for the Tribe and the surrounding community.
"We fully expect the Department of the Interior to resolve this issue expeditiously, and are ready to resume our construction as soon as clearance is received."
The property was approved in the Tribal-State compact signed by the Governor of Louisiana and approved by the Secretary of the Interior on Sept. 15, 1992, Brosig said. The Tribal-State compact provides for casino style gaming on these lands.
Grand Casinos, Inc., develops and manages casino gaming facilities in emerging gaming markets on both Indian and company-owned sites. Grand Casinos, Inc., is traded on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol GRND.
