GRACO MINNEAPOLIS REGISTERS TO ISO 9001 QUALITY MANAGEMENT STANDARD

MINNEAPOLIS, April 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Graco Inc.'s (NYSE: GGG) facilities in Minneapolis have become registered to the ISO 9001 Quality Standard developed by the Geneva-based International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
"ISO 9000 is a globally recognized international series of quality management standards for operating a company," said Roy Richardson, Graco vice president of human resources and Quality Management Systems. "Registration to ISO 9001, the most stringent standard, will assure our customers that we are providing consistent quality in our products and services. Every aspect of our business that directly relates to customers is covered by the standard."
"Compliance to ISO 9001 is quickly becoming a requirement to do business with customers around the world," said Duane Ehresmann, Quality Management System representative in Minneapolis. "About 59 countries have adopted these international standards including the United States. Only about 800 U.S. companies, however, have sites that have achieved registration to ISO 9000."
Minneapolis is Graco's major location for design, manufacturing, and distribution of most of its product lines. Graco employees in Minneapolis spent thousands of hours in 1992 and 1993 developing a detailed quality management system which meets the ISO 9001 standard. Work processes and procedures are documented, and records are kept to show that employees follow the system. Internal audits then verify that the system is working. When problems occur, they are fixed promptly and permanently through a corrective action process, according to Richardson.
During the week of April 19, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) assessed the Graco Minneapolis quality management system. After a 5-day audit by this international registering agency, the site's quality management system was certified as compliant to the ISO 9001 standard. Ongoing audits by NSAI will be required to maintain registration.
Graco Minneapolis joins Graco sites in Canada, Norway, Belgium and the United Kingdom that have already become registered to the standard. Six additional Graco sites worldwide will seek ISO registration in 1993.
