GRACE DEARBORN TO COMMERCIALIZE DARAMEND SOIL BIOREMEDIATION PROCESS

BOCA RATON, Fla., May 21 /PRNewsiwre/ -- Grace Dearborn Canada, a unit of W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA), today announced that it plans to commercialize the DARAMEND process, designed to remediate soil contaminated with toxic organic compounds such as pentachlorophenol (PCP) and a full range of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
The DARAMEND treatment technology involves the application of certain natural materials and nutrients to the soil in optimum quantities following complete analysis of the soil conditions. The technology has been laboratory-tested on more than 20 different contaminated soils and successfully applied in field tests on an industrial wood preservation site in Canada.
The DARAMEND process can handle initial concentrations of toxic substances four to five times higher than o technologies on the market. It also has reduced toxic compounds to levels at or below cleanup guidelines set by the Canadian Council of the Ministers of the Environment at competitive costs. The process can be applied to contaminated soil after excavation or directly to the contaminated soil, saving the cost of excavation.
The DARAMEND process was developed under the sponsorship of and is owned by the government of Canada. Grace Dearborn Canada has been granted the exclusive license for worldwide applications of the technology, and patent applications have been filed.
Grace is the world's largest specialty chemicals company and holds a leadership position in specialized health care.
