GRACE CONTAINER PRESIDENT EHLERS PERISHES IN PRIVATE PLANE CRASH

 BOCA RATON, Fla., June 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Charles H. (Chuck) Ehlers, 62, a W. R. Grace & Co. (NYSE: GRA) corporate vice president and president of the company's worldwide container product line based in Woburn, Mass., perished Friday, June 18, with his wife of 39 years, Arlene (formerly Mitchell), 61, and executive assistant and 26-year Grace employee, Joyce Thorne, 52, as his private plan crashed on take- off from Martha's Vineyard, Mass. The Ehlers lived in Concord, Mass., and Ms. Thorne resided in Burlington, Mass.
 After starting with the Dewey and Almy Chemical Division as a sales engineer in 1954, Mr. Ehlers held various managerial positions including sales product manager, research manager, manufacturing development manager, Cambridge plant manager, manufacturing manager and vice president of manufacturing. In 1971 he was appointed executive vice president for the division's Container and Chemical Specialties operations, and in 1975 he was named president of Grace's Dewey and Almy Chemical Division. He was elected a corporate vice president in 1978 and was named to his present position in 1992.
 A native of New York City, Mr. Ehlers was born on July 3, 1930. He graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1952 with a B.S. degree in business and engineering administration. Upon his graduation, he served in the U.S. Air Force for two years as a manpower officer and civilian personnel officer, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
 In 1975 Mr. Ehlers completed the Harvard Business School's Advancement Management Program. He was a director of the Cambridge Trust Company, Cambridge Online Services, Inc. and the Instron Corporation. He was also director of the North Suburban Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Can Manufacturers Institute Board of Governors, a trustee of the Technology Building Corporation, a corporator of Emerson Hospital, a trustee of the Concord Museum and a deputy sheriff of Middlesex County, Mass. Mr. Ehlers was also a member of the Algonquin Club of Boston.
 Mrs. Arlene Ehlers, a native of Enid, Okla., graduated from Dana Hall in Wellesley, Mass., and taught English in Cambridge, Mass. She volunteered time with Concord Orchestra and was director of ticket sales.
 The Ehlers are survived by a son, John, of Double Oak (Dallas), Texas, a pilot with American Airlines, and a daughter, Christine, of Winchester, Va. Mr. Ehlers is also survived by his mother, Rose, of Concord. Mrs. Ehlers is also survived by her sisters, Willa Jean Schneider and Mary Ellen Lee, and her brothers, E. B. Mitchell and J. C. Mitchell, all of Oklahoma.
 Ms. Thorne had been employed for 26 years by Grace Container Products, most recently as executive assistant to Mr. Ehlers. She graduated from Cambridge High and Latin in Cambridge, Mass. She was active in church affairs at the Union Baptist Church, Cambridge, Mass., was a member of the singing group, Grace Notes, and Grace's Good Neighbors program, dedicated to supporting senior groups and school partnerships in the Greater Boston area.
 She is survived by two daughters, Kimberley and Monique, both of Medford, Mass., and her mother, Mrs. R. C. Marsh, of Cambridge.
 Visitation for the Ehlers will be at MacRae-Tunnicliffe Funeral Home, Thoreau and Belknap Streets in Concord, Mass., 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, June 23. Services will be held at the First Parish Church, 20 Lexington Road, Concord, Mass., on Thursday, June 24, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Concord Orchestra, P.O. Box 381, Concord, MA 01742.
 Visitation for Ms. Thorne will be at the Union Baptist Church, 874 Main Street, Cambridge, Mass., 2-4 p.m. and 7-8 p.m. Thursday, June 24. Funeral service will be held at the Church, 8-9 p.m. on Thursday. Interment will be Friday, June 25.
