GPU Energy Urges Continued Electric Conservation.

READING, Pa.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--July 6, 1999--

This is an electric power alert from GPU Energy. GPU Energy and PJM, the power pool for the Mid-Atlantic Region, is experiencing an extremely high demand for electricity due to the past few days of hot, humid weather. Companies with prearranged interruptible service have been asked to reduce their demand.

As a result of the hot, humid weather, GPU Energy may be required to initiate further emergency procedures, up to and including rolling blackouts (systemwide, short duration, controlled power interruptions), to preserve the integrity of the region's power grid.

GPU Energy urgently requests that our customers take the following steps to significantly reduce the use of electricity:

-- If health permits, turn off air conditioners, as well as all

non-essential appliances and electric lights;

-- Do not open refrigerators or freezers;

-- Avoid using electrically heated water or major household appliances like electric stoves, dishwashers and clothes dryers;

-- Close curtains and blinds to keep out the sun and retain cooler air inside your homes;

-- Check backup facilities for electric-powered medical equipment and battery operated radios and flashlights, should they be needed. Following these guidelines to reduce the use of electricity will help avoid serious electric power outages and emergency service interruptions throughout the day. As with any outage, customers who are without service are urged to contact GPU Energy Customer Service at 1-800-545-7738.

GPU Energy will continue to keep you informed of the power situation.
