GPT OPENS TWIN CITIES OFFICE TO LAUNCH NORTH AMERICAN EXPANSION
MINNEAPOLIS, June 24 /PRNewswire/ -- GPT Limited, jointly owned by GEC (the General Electric Company p.l.c. of England) and Siemens, has opened a working facility in the Twin Cities to serve the developing interactive information services industry in North America.
Together, GEC and Siemens form the second largest telecommunications company in the world. With the introduction of GPT Videotex & Secure Systems in Minnesota, the company brings its products and expertise to a huge market that is largely untapped.
The new facility, located in Court International Building, St. Paul, Minn., will provide videotex service bureau functions to potential information providers, operate in conjunction with U.S. West's Community link electronic information gateway and market a variety of interactive products and services ranging from public information kiosks, to the most advanced videotex gateway systems in use today.
Jim Goyne, sales and marketing manager for the company said the company is poised to revolutionize videotex in North America. "This major market has had only minimal exposure to the on-line graphics standards now employed in most other parts of the world. It presents a wealth of growth opportunities for GPT," he said. The company has just introduced new equipment and computers that can operate entire gateways as well as videotex service bureaus and many other types of value-added- service networks, all on a revolutionary RISC-based platform. In addition to videotex, this platform features an array of integrated services such as E-mail, X.400, fax store & forward, Telex, etc.
The videotex market consists of two major segments: the end-user consumer and the information service provider. Both segments have different technical requirements. The end-user consumer needs only a small, inexpensive terminal that connects to a phone line or a home computer with a modem.
The information service provider needs a computer/modem setup and the more advanced capabilities of a service bureau to generate graphics. A local information gateway, such as Community Link, is a practical necessity to deliver the information of providers' services to a large audience. GPT maintains such gateways on systems sold to 20 national public network customers and many private organizations throughout the world.
On-line or videotex services include a wide range of applications such as:
-- Informational - Bus schedules, theater features and show times, electronic yellow pages, emergency advisories, road closings and government office hours, etc.
-- Transactional - Banking and bill paying from a home terminal, home shopping including groceries, pay-per-view television, school registration and driver's license renewal, etc.
-- Communications - Significant telecommunications enhancement for hearing impaired and homebound individuals, E-mail to/from elected officials and other government service providers, etc.
-- Entertainment - Games for all ages, single or group participation with other on-line users locally and in distant locations, Chat services, "text pals" (instead of pen pals) around the world, books on line, etc.
Much of the development of the videotex and on-line information market occurred in England and European countries and other parts of the world where GPT has been a major player. GEC, GPT's parent was instrumental in the development of the first public videotex system {British Telcom's PRESTEL(TM)} in 1974.
Development of services in the United States and North America has been limited by federal and state regulation and a wide array of technical standards, Goyne said. "Now, GPT brings to North America the technology, systems and support to change the face of videotex in this hemisphere."
