GPA and success.

Byline: Aatif Samejo-Dadu

AMID rising competition, students often associate their success with their high academic excellence. For many, achieving a good grade point average (GPA) is the only goal of their studies. Hence, they get disheartened, sometimes even depressed, when they are not able to achieve their targets in the fields of their cherished choices. To be honest, the problem is not a low GPA, but the lack of counselling available to the students.

I have seen young men and women who consider themselves a failure only because of their low GPA. They have no idea that a GPA just cannot decide their future. It is their self-confidence and skills in their respective fields that guarantee success.

Skill is not limited only to a person's ability to read and write; it is rather the ability to complete a task or job assigned, and to do so diligently and intelligently. Albert Einstein was not considered talented by his teachers, yet he is known as the genius that he was. In fact, the word 'genius' itself produces a mind-image of Einstein.

Had he not worked harder, he would not have made remarkable discoveries. During his time at a patent office from 1902 to 1905, Einstein performed experiments and wrote five papers that shook the world and made him what we know he was.

No one remembers the person who achieved the highest marks in Einstein's class. Nobody remembers or even wonders how many marks he himself got.

Educational institutions must conduct motivational and counselling seminars regularly to inspire their students to change their success yardstick and work hard and smart towards their goals.
