GP Federations to bring benefits.

OPTOMETRISTS ARE ideally placed to benefit from the creation of General Practitioner Federations when they are introduced across the UK in April 2016, an expert in NHS commissioning has said.

GP Federations will be made up of up to 60,000 patients, with smaller commissioning groups also being formed, informed Rachel Helmn, director of Hum UK, which supports the Heidelberg Engineering Academy as a business partner.

"GPs are looking to focus on preventative care, with the provision being closer to home for patients," she said, adding: "Optometrists are in the driving seat to do this but there is a route to take and it is essential to look at what is required locally."

Establishing a new regime for GP commissioning, Ms Helmn said that by providing support services beyond clinical education such as marketing, financial and patient journey planning advice, the Academy offered the means of integrating optical coherence tomography into practice.
