NAMES COORDINATOR FOR BUSINESS AND INDUSTRY INITIATIVES
RALEIGH, N.C., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The Governor's Commission on Reduction of Infant Mortality announced today that Ben Garrett has been named Coordinator for Business and Industry Initiatives. The Business and Industry position of the Commission is made possible through a three-year grant provided by Burroughs Wellcome Co., a research-based pharmaceutical company headquartered in Research Triangle Park with manufacturing facilities in Greenville, N.C. The company is dedicated to the discovery, development, manufacture and sale of products to promote human health.
Garrett, a native of Georgia and a Magna Cum Laude Graduate of the University of Georgia, was recently the HealthWatch reporter and anchor for WPTF-TV of Raleigh-Durham and has worked as a political and business correspondent. He has been actively involved with community service organizations such as the AIDS Control Branch Media Advisory Panel, Healthy Mothers-Healthy Babies of Wake County, and the Wake Council on Adolescent Pregnancy. Through his active involvement with health care issues, Garrett has received a number of honors including The N.C. AIDS Control Branch Media Award, The American Heart Association & Torch Award, and The American Cancer Society Media Award. He also won Associated Press first place honors for In-Depth Series, Continuing News and Investigative Reporting.
In addition to communicating ways the State's businesses can assist existing prevention and reduction efforts, Garrett will also be responsible for helping companies develop benefit packages and presenting ways communities and businesses can work together in local infant mortality prevention efforts. Garrett will work with businesses of all sizes from large corporations to small offices and shops with three employees to farmers with migrant and seasonal workers.
