 CHANTILLY, Va., Oct. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Government Technology Services, Inc. (NASDAQ: GTSI) announced today that Thomas L. Smudz has been appointed senior vice president and chief financial officer of the corporation. He will replace George A. Barstis who is assuming the position of vice president-business development. Smudz brings to the position more than 30 years of experience as a senior corporate financial executive. His responsibilities will include overseeing the company's accounting, treasury and financial systems, managing cash flows and analyzing financial strategies. He will report directly to R.M. Rickenbach, chairman and chief executive officer.
 From 1979 to the present, Smudz, 53, was employed by The Wuliger Companies and Sealy Corporation, a Fortune 500 company. While with Sealy, as vice president, finance and chief financial officer, he managed all financial and administration activities for the company and it's 52 manufacturing plants, and oversaw Sealy's acquisition of 16 companies with total sales over $500 million.
 The Wuliger Companies, a private investment company and charitable trust of Ernest M. Wuliger, former chairman and CEO of Sealy, retained Smudz as vice president of finance and chief financial officer following the successful sale of Sealy in 1989 for nearly $1 billion. He was responsible for all financial activities including the negotiation of the acquisition of three companies with combined sales exceeding $400 million.
 From 1969 to 1979, Smudz served as Assistant Treasurer for Lamson & Sessions, a diversified manufacturer of fabricated metal products, where he initially organized the internal audit function and ultimately managed and reorganized the corporate finance activities.
 Smudz began his career in 1963 at Ernst & Young, where over a six-year period he held various auditing positions before being hired by Lamson & Sessions.

 A native of Cleveland, Smudz is a Certified Public Accountant and holds both a Bachelor of Science in Commerce and a Masters of Business Administration from Ohio University. He is married and has four children.
 GTSI is the leading reseller of microcomputer and UNIX workstation hardware, software and networking products combined, to the Federal Government market.
