GOV. WILSON CONVINCES LOUISIANA-PACIFIC TO BUILD ROOFING PLANT IN CALIFORNIA, NOT MEXICO

SAMOA, Calif., Sept. 14, /PRNewswire/ -- Louisiana-Pacific Corp. (L-P) (NYSE: LPX) announced today that it has decided to locate a new cement fiber roof shake plant in Red Bluff. The company had announced last month that the plant was to be built in Ensenada, Mexico, but intervention by California Governor Pete Wilson convinced the company to reconsider its earlier decision.
"A big detriment to locating a new plant in California has been the state's lengthy and cumbersome permitting process, said L-P Chairman and President Harry A. Merlo. "Reforms by Governor Wilson and his Red Team have streamlined the process and will allow us to maintain a reasonably aggressive construction schedule. We're particularly pleased for this employment opportunity for a number of L-P workers whose sawmill jobs have been eliminated in recent months as environmental pressures make less and less timber available for production."
"Louisiana-Pacific's decision to build a roofing plant in Red Bluff is a clear sign that California is the place to do business," said Governor Pete Wilson. "This $28 million investment brings 92 new jobs and is the direct result of TeamCalifornia's efforts to bring new business to the Golden State."
According to Merlo, "We're also encouraged by recent legislative activity led by Assembly Speaker Willie Brown which provides tax credit for manufacturing equipment, indicating that state government wants to assist businesses willing to locate in California."
The new plant will have the capacity to make 180,000 squares of shakes per year. That's the amount needed for 7200 average roofs. Following the 1991 Oakland fire, the flammability of roof shakes came under a great deal of scrutiny, leading the California legislature to enact strict roofing requirements. The shakes L-P will manufacture will meet these new standards. They combine cement with fly ash and sawdust to create a product that is fire resistant, environmentally friendly and affordable. The plant is expected to be completed by mid-1994.
Louisiana-Pacific is a major building products company known for its innovation in developing high-performance, affordable, environmentally sound construction materials. Its Western Division is headquartered in Samoa. The division, with operations in Northern California and in Mexico, employs nearly 1,000 people.
