GOV. WILLIAM DONALD SCHAEFER ANNOUNCES PASSENGER TRAFFIC UP AT BWI

ANNAPOLIS, Md., June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer announced an upswing in passenger traffic at Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI). Commercial passenger traffic totals increased 2.1 percent in April 1993.
"This increase reflects an encouraging trend in the industry and is good news for BWI," Schaefer said. The April results reflected the first month of combined airline growth at BWI in nearly 18 months. Commercial flights also increased slightly.
Maryland Transportation Secretary O. James Lighthizer said the positive trends at BWI are a sign of the gradually improving economy and strong gains in passenger traffic originating from the Baltimore/Washington area. He noted airport parking lot use during the month was up a healthy 10 percent and concession revenues jumped 23 percent.
"This upturn in passenger traffic at BWI indicates more passengers are using the airport and they're spending more of their travel dollars while there," he concluded.
Following a long series of service cuts from more than a year ago, USAir has recently added St. Louis and more Boston flights to its BWI schedule. USAir now operates 183 daily departures at its BWI Hub. Other major airlines at BWI have also added service during the past year, increasing passenger traffic 12 percent in 1992.
BWI now has 17 airlines operating 600 daily flights to 80 nonstop destinations.
