GOV. LAWTON CHILES WILL ADDRESS DADE SCHOOL BOARD ON WEDNESDAY
 ABOUT THE EDUCATION FISCAL CRISIS
MIAMI, March 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Florida Gov. Lawton Chiles will discuss the state budget impasse and the related education-funding crisis before the Dade County School Board this Wednesday, March 18, some time between 4 and 5 p.m. during a regular public meeting of the board in the first-floor auditorium of the School Board Administration Building, 1450 N.E. Second Ave. in Miami.
It is anticipated that members of the school board will question Gov. Chiles briefly following his presentation. The press is invited to cover the event.
Because of the state funding crisis, education programs in Dade have been reduced or curtailed with undesirable effects such as increases in class size and elimination of many elective courses. For the first time in memory, Dade schools are receiving less state funding per student than during a previous school year. Moreover, the school district has been forced to cut approximately $228.8 million from education programs during the current school year. Another shortfall in funding from Tallahassee may occur soon, forcing additional cutbacks in Dade education programs.
Further information on Gov. Chiles' appearance before the school board on Wednesday may be obtained from the governor's press secretary, Julie Anbender, at 904-488-5394.
