GOV. CASEY VOWS EVERY EFFORT TO SAVE BETHLEHEM JOBS
HARRISBURG, Pa., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey today

pledged to continue his administration's efforts to help find a buyer for Bethlehem's Steel Corp.'s (NYSE: BS) Johnstown plant and to help modernize it Steelton facility in order to save Pennsylvania jobs.
"We're going to continue the effort that began six months ago with Acting Commerce Secretary Andrew Greenberg to work with Bethlehem and the United Steelworkers Union ... to keep those facilities open," Casey said.
The governor was responding to the Pennsylvania-based steelmaker's announcement this morning that it was putting up for sale facilities in Johnstown; Sparrows Point, Md., and Lackawanna, N.Y., and scaling back its operations in Steelton.
Casey also has instructed state Labor and Industry Secretary Tom Foley to implement the commonwealth's proven dislocated employee assistance strategy in Johnstown to provide workers facing layoffs with job counseling and job search assistance.
"Today's announcement is a market decision -- a national decision -- by Bethlehem Steel, made after surveying the company's competitive position," Casey said.
"We're going to be working with Bethlehem and the United Steelworkers to keep Johnstown open with a new buyer. We have a window of opportunity over the next 60 to 90 days.
"We've also made it clear to both the steel company and to the union through Secretary Greenberg that my administration wants to be helpful at both Steelton and Bethlehem to help the company modernize those facilities to make them more competitive and keep them open."
Casey noted that his administration's track record in easing the economic impact of plant closings has been recognized nationally.
"Our Department of Labor and Industry is going to be offering a kind of 'one-stop shopping' approach to support services to those workers who will be dislocated with counseling and other alternative employment kind of services," the governor said. "It's worked very well at Volkswagen in New Stanton and RCA in Lancaster.
"We're not going to let this thing rest. We're going to fight very hard to keep activity in Johnstown under new ownership to keep those jobs there for the people."
