GOV. CASEY ANNOUNCES GRANT FOR SONY SITE PREPARATION
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Gov. Robert P. Casey today announced the approval of a $1 million grant for demolition work at the former Volkswagen plant in New Stanton, Westmoreland County, where Sony Corp. of America is establishing a $370 million television assembly plant.
The Economic Development Partnership grant will be used by the Redevelopment Authority of Westmoreland County for the demolition and removal of old equipment and partitions at the facility.
"Since 1990, we have worked with Sony to help the company establish a world-class manufacturing facility," said Casey. "Through each phase of this project, we have used our economic development resources to support the creation of new jobs and opportunities for the people of southwestern Pennsylvania."
To date, the state Department of Commerce has committed $3 million for demolition activities at the site. Pennsylvania's total investment in the project is $35 million, including $21.5 million from the state's Sunny Day Loan program.
The Sony facility will include a manufacturing plant for large screen color television picture tubes and an assembly operation for 27-inch and rear projection television sets.
The television assembly facility is scheduled to open next month, while the picture tube plant is scheduled to begin production in January 1994.
The facility eventually will employ 1,800 workers.
