GOTTSCHALKS ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER SALES RESULTS

 FRESNO, Calif., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Gottschalks Inc. (NYSE: GOT) announced that September 1993 sales increased 7.1 percent to $28.9 million from $26.9 million for September of 1992. Same store sales for the September period increased 4 percent. On a year-to-date basis, total sales increased 0.7 percent to $194.5 million from $193.1 million for the prior year period. Same store sales on a year-to-date basis decreased 1.6 percent from the prior year.
 "September sales have increased in most departments, and in the majority of our stores," stated Joe Levy, chairman and chief executive officer. "This is the first month since last December that we have seen an improvement in consumer confidence in our market areas. Our buyers have worked very hard in procuring timely items at extremely good prices, and our sales associates have been making a concentrated effort to focus on the needs of our customers. Our philosophy of providing our customers with the best value, fashion and service, is paying off at the sales terminal. We are hopeful that this trend will continue through the third and fourth quarters. We are extremely encouraged," added Levy.
