GOTTSCHALKS ANNOUNCES OCTOBER SALES RESULTS FRESNO, Calif., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Gottschalks Inc.
(NYSE: GOT) announced that October 1991 sales increased 3.5 percent to $22.2 million from $21.4 million for the prior year October. Same stores sales for the October period increased 3.2 percent. Total third quarter sales increased 7.2 percent to $69.9 million, with same store sales increasing 4.8 percent. Same store sales on a year-to-date basis increased 6.5 percent over the prior year.
Robert Lawson, the company's chief financial officer, stated "The weather was a major influence on sales results. Temperatures averaged nearly 15 degrees above normal until the 23rd of the month and we were behind last year's sales at that point. From the time the weather turned, both total sales and same store sales increased approximately 12 percent. We're hopeful at this point that the more recent sales trends are indicative of improved consumer confidence in our market areas," added Lawson.
