(NYSE: GOT) announced that May 1992 sales increased 8.7 percent to $24.9 million from $22.9 million during the prior year May sales levels. Same store sales for the May period increased 1.9 percent.
For the 1992 seventeen week period-to-date, company sales increased 7.4 percent to $92.2 million from $85.9 million for the prior year period. Same store sales for the seventeen-week period decreased 0.3 percent. In commenting on the results, Joe Levy, chairman and chief executive officer, noted that "We were going against extremely strong comparisons, as May 1991 sales were up 24 percent total and 11 percent comp, so we were pleased with the 8.7 percent total and 1.9 percent comp for May 1992. Sales were strong in men's and women's sportswear, dresses and juniors. We are also noticing a turn in our hard good departments, as we see the buying public expressing more confidence in the economy. We are experiencing very warm weather in June, which is also driving sales." Sales results are summarized as follows: June 1, June 2, Total Percent Same Store 1992 1991 Increase Sales Increase Sales, Four Weeks Ended $24,935 $22,938 8.7 1.9 Sales, 17 Weeks Ended $92,186 $85,868 7.4 (0.3) Gottschalks is a west coast regional department store chain, currently operating 24 department stores and 22 specialty apparel stores located in California and Tacoma, Wash.
