GOTTSCHALKS ANNOUNCES JULY SALES RESULTS

    FRESNO, Calif., Aug. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Gottschalks Inc. (NYSE: GOT) announced today that total sales for the month of July 1993 increased 1.6 percent to $22.2 million from $21.9 million in July of the prior year.  Same store sales for the month of July decreased 1.6 percent.
    Total sales for the second quarter ending July 31, 1993, increased 1.6 percent to $76.2 million from $75.0 million in the second quarter of the prior year.  Same store sales for the second quarter decreased 1.8 percent.
    On a year-to-date basis, total sales for the six-month period ending July 31, 1993, decreased 0.1 percent to $142.1 million from $142.3 million for the same six-month period in the prior year.  Same store sales on a year-to-date basis decreased 2.6 percent.
    "We are pleased with the sales results in light of the continued sluggish California economy," said Joe Levy, chairman and chief executive officer.  Levy went on to say that "we remain cautiously optimistic as we enter our fall season."
