GOTTSCHALKS ANNOUNCES AUGUST SALES RESULTS FRESNO, Calif., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Gottschalks Inc.
(NYSE: GOT) announced that August 1992 sales increased 4.0 percent to $23.9 million from $23.0 million for the prior year period. Same store sales for the August period decreased 1.0 percent. For the 30-week 1992 period to date, total sales increased 6.0 percent to $166.2 million from $156.8 million for the year earlier 30-week period. Same store sales on a year-to-date basis decreased 1.4 percent over the prior year.
James Clifford, executive vice president/chief financial officer stated, "Labor day fell later this year, affecting sales in the last week of August. For the month, Better and Budget Sportswear, Cosmetics and Men's Sportswear and Accessories were strong. Overall, we continue to feel the effects of the economic problems facing the nation and the state." Sales, 30 weeks ended $166,178 $156,830 6.0 pct. (1.4) pct. Gottschalks is a regional department store chain, currently operating 25 department stores and 22 specialty apparel stores in the Central Valley and Central Coast areas of California, Tacoma, Wash. and Klamath Falls, Ore.
