GORMLEY BANS 'KILLER WEEDS'.

Byline: DARREN BOYLE

GREEN Minister John Gormley will BAN a number of popular pond plants because of the threat the pose to native species.

The biodiversity fan wants to wipe out a host of foreign species which have invaded the nation's waterways.

Minister Gormley's scorched earth policy will apply to the creeping water primrose, as well as the curly leaved pondweed.

Also on the outlaw list are the innocent sounding Water Fern, Nuttal's Pondweed and even the delightfully sounding Parrot's Feather and Fringed Water Lily.

Gormley, pictured, will ban the sale of these invasive species to protect the nation's waterways.

Fishery board officials have found Nuttal's pond weed in the Killarney lakes in Co Kerry recently.

The weed has wrecked several rivers in southern France where it was spreading uncontrollably.
