GORDON MOORE NAMED 1993 WINNER OF THE MCI INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP AWARD FOR INNOVATION

CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Gordon Moore, Chairman of the Board and co-founder of Intel Corporation, and currently Director of Transamerica Corporation and Varian Associates, has been named the 1993 winner of the MCI Communications Information Technology Leadership Award for Innovation by the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards (CWSA) Program, the program announced today. Dr. Moore will be recognized at the CWSA's annual dinner at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., on June 7.
Dr. Moore, 64, was named for his visionary thinking, which, over the past 30 years, has revolutionized information technology. Trained as a chemist and physicist, Dr. Moore is widely-known as a technologist, entrepreneur and an ambitious manager whose active career led from the labs at The California Institute of Technology to the founding of two of the most significant companies in the history of electronics: Fairchild Semiconductor, the progenitor of Silicon Valley, and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: INTC) which, in 1971 introduced the world's first microprocessor. The Large Scale Integrated (LSI), random access memory (DRAM), and the 386 series of computer chips, are among the many breakthroughs that have placed Dr. Moore at the pioneering front of the semiconductor industry, thus setting new market standards, while proving the worth of a research-driven approach to business. Today, Intel's worldwide operation employs 25,000 people and maintains a preeminent position in both the multi-billion-dollar semiconductor and the supercomputer industry.
"Dr. Moore's work is a brilliant combination of inspiration and persistence. . . .The inspiration to see the future of integrated circuits and the persistence to drive them through the throes of research and development into a highly successful commercial reality," says Patrick J. McGovern, chairman of International Data Group and founding chairman of the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Chairman's Committee.
The MCI Award annually recognizes an individual who uses information technology to design, implement, manufacture or manage genuine technological innovation. The first award, in 1991, was presented to Erich Bloch, former director of the National Science Foundation.
MCI (NASDAQ-NMS: MCIC) offers a full range of domestic and global telecommunications services through one of the world's largest state-of- the-art networks. With 1992 revenue of more than $10 billion, the company is the second largest long distance provider in the U.S. and has more than 60 offices in 55 countries, worldwide.
The Information Technology Leadership Awards, established in 1990, honor individuals whose values and vision have been crucial to industry development. These awards enhance the Computerworld Smithsonian Awards Program, founded in 1989 to recognize the positive impact of information technology in all aspects of human endeavor. The awards honor outstanding applications of information technology, while clearly identifying to the general public the benefits that information technology brings to all of our lives. The Smithsonian Institution is the recipient of an annual grant generated by the Awards Foundation.
