GOP shortlisted for top global maritime award.

MANAMA: The General Organisation of Sea Ports (GOP), Bahrain's maritime regulatory authority, has been shortlisted in the port operator and authority category of the prestigious 2011 Lloyds List Global Awards.

The awards, which are designed to recognise excellence in the shipping industry, will acknowledge the best port authority or operator that has maintained the highest standards of operational efficiency and customer service throughout the year.

As one of six finalists for the award, GOP has been nominated for demonstrating exceptional professional excellence in the maritime and shipping industry and offering quality services to meet the increasing needs of users and stakeholders alike.

Being the shipping industry's most acclaimed, credible and well supported event, the Lloyd's List Award winners will be announced at a ceremony scheduled to take place at the Hilton Park Lane, London, on September 20.

GOP, as a regulator, is responsible for supervising all maritime safety and environmental matters and ensuring adequate infrastructure is in place to serve the needs of the kingdom's seaports, including the region's newest state-of-the-art port Khalifa Bin Salman Port (KBSP).

As part of its ongoing strategy, GOP regulates and monitors the operations and performance of APM Terminals, the operators of the KBSP.

"We are proud that GOP has been shortlisted for one of the most prestigious global awards in the shipping and maritime industry," said GOP chairman Shaikh Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa.

"The selection recognises our efforts to outperform the marketplace and establish Bahrain as the ideal regional transhipment hub.

"As one of the leading regulatory authorities in the region, GOP continues to take numerous measures to ensure that our customers and end users benefit from KBSP's outstanding safety standards and reliable, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly services," he said.

The judging panel for the awards comprises independent, senior industry experts from around the world, chosen for their knowledge, objectivity and credibility.

Lloyd's List is the leading global daily newspaper for the maritime industry and its awards provide a benchmark of excellence in the major disciplines of shipping.
