GOODYEAR TO INSTALL NEON "BLIMP" SIGNS

GOODYEAR TO INSTALL NEON "BLIMP" SIGNS
DETROIT, April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The number of motor vehicles

being produced will come to an abrupt halt today -- but only on the three Goodyear signs here that have tracked production since the 1960s.
The signs are getting a complete renovation that will give Detroit it own fleet of large Goodyear blimps -- even though they'll be permanently attached to the new versions of the vehicle-counting signs.
Jim Barnett, vice president of original equipment tire sales worldwide for Goodyear, said that the positive signs of economic recovery and increased industry production prompted the tiremaker to convert the signs into neon-lit blimps, the largest measuring nearly 100 feet in length.
The blimps will have a version of their airborne counterparts' electronic displays that will be visible both night and day to continue tracking automotive production. The new signs also will offer other graphic communication options to support local events and Goodyear.
The signs slated for replacement are located on the expressways -- one at the northwest corner of I-75 and I-94 and the other at the southwest corner of West I-94 and Monroe. The current sign at the northwest corner of Lodge Freeway and Clairmont will not be replaced, Barnett said.
Gannet Outdoor Co. of Michigan, overseer of the project, said the neon blimps utilizing the new colors of the other airships already are under construction.
Work will be completed in stages throughout April and May in preparation for an early June launch.
A christening and lighting of the new blimp signs is being scheduled in conjunction with the Detroit Grand Prix and the visit by the real thing, Goodyear's Spirit of Akron airship.
