 GOODYEAR TO DELIVER HISTORIC SHIPMENT
 OF EARTHMOVER TIRES TO RUSSIA
TOPEKA, Kan., June 9 /PRNewswire/ -- A historic shipment of 110 huge Goodyear earthmover tires made in the heartland of the U.S. will be loaded onto flatbed trailers here today enroute to gemstone and coal mines in the Commonwealth of Independent States, formerly the Soviet Union.
Goodyear (NYSE: GT), the last large American-owned tire company, said the tires eventually will be mounted on 150-ton dump trucks in Russia.
Peter Blackford, director of export operations for Goodyear, said that the 110 Topeka-made tires are the first shipment of a major order of 51-inch rim diameter earthmover tires, the name given off-road tires used mostly on large vehicles in mining and construction work.
The Goodyear Topeka plant will produce the majority of tires, with the balance coming from Nippon Giant, Goodyear's joint venture manufacturing operation in Japan.
The Topeka plant is the sole Goodyear manufacturer of earthmover tires in the U.S.
Goodyear did not disclose the specific value of the Topeka shipment, but said the entire order was a multimillion dollar deal.
Ten flatbed trucks, each carrying eleven 33.00R51 radial earthmover tires, will leave Goodyear's Topeka plant early morning on June 10. After arriving in Milwaukee, the 110 tires will be loaded onto a Great Lakes ship enroute to its port of entry, the city of St. Petersburg, Russia.
"Russia's move toward a free market economy, coupled with its desire for technically superior goods, created the climate for a good relationship for Goodyear," Blackford said. "How could we say 'Nyet'?"
