GOODYEAR IS SETTING THE "PACE" FOR
 CADILLAC ALLANTE AT INDY
INDIANAPOLIS, May 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Throw away those perceptions that a Cadillac has to be a luxury touring car -- unless your idea of "touring" is setting the pace for Indianapolis race cars this month at speeds in excess of 120 mph.
The same applies to the Goodyear Eagle GA "touring" radials that will carry the 1993 Cadillac Allante ultra-luxury sports car, the pace car for this year's Indianapolis 500, around the slightly banked left- hand turns of the Speedway May 24. The tires will carry a special "Z" speed rating to handle the speeds and the turns.
Goodyear's first "Z" speed-rated Eagle GA already has been put through its "paces" successfully in preparation for its debut in front of more than a quarter million spectators and hundreds of millions more around the world via television.
After monitoring prerace practices, Walt Allen, Goodyear engineer for passenger tire programs, said the same Eagle GAs used for practice are likely to hit the track on race day without the customary Indy pit stop for a tire change.
"The tires are responding extremely well to the testing," Allen said. "We provided seven additional sets of tires for backup, but it doesn't appear that they'll need to be changed."
The tires, P225/60ZR16s manufactured at Goodyear's Lawton, Okla., plant, also are unusual in that they haven't been buffed to a reduced tread depth to handle the high-speed race-track driving. Allen said it wasn't necessary, based on the way the car performs and acts in harmony with the tires.
The Allante will run around 120 mph coming around turn 4 as the pace car gets out of the way of 33 race cars that can reach speeds of 240 mph.
However, they could go much quicker. Top speed on the Allante is rated at 150 mph by Cadillac, "and the tires are certified for speeds up to 161 mph," Allen said.
