GOODYEAR INTRODUCES FOUR NEW TRUCK TIRES

SAN ANGELO, Texas, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- After nearly a billion test miles, four new highway truck tires were introduced here today by The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: GT).
Calling them its 300 Series Unisteel radial truck tires, Goodyear says they are the first ever designed specifically to attack for all wheel positions the problems of irregular treadwear -- the leading cause of premature tire removal by line-haul fleets.
The name 300 Series reflects three generations of development and engineering refinement resulting in new offerings for the three truck axle positions -- drive (G362 and G328), steer (G359) and trail (G314), according to Goodyear engineers.
Each tire in the 300 Series line features a new tread pattern and footprint configuration, casing construction changes and patented rubber compounds. Each compound was created to meet the needs of the specific axle position.
The combined technologies will make major contributions toward regular, even treadware plus longer original tire life, according to Goodyear engineers.
The compound innovations also offer lower rolling resistance over conventional line-haul tires, improving fuel efficiency as well as enhancing handling characteristics and traction on wet, dry and ice, according to the company.
Bryan L. Kinnamon, general manager of Goodyear's commercial tire business, said irregular wear on commercial trucks keeps trucking firms and operators from realizing full value from their tire investment.
"The trucking industry is fiercely competitive today, and that trend will continue," Kinnamon said, "Any time we can pull additional miles of service from a tire for a customer, we've put them many operating dollars ahead of the game."
Kinnamon said many of those customers have been involved in testing the 300 Series, analyzing various versions of approximately 25,000 test tires for all axle positions. "These tires were driven nearly a billion miles on the widest possible assortment of vehicle types and applications," Kinnamon said.
Chuck Yurkovich, manager of medium commercial truck tires, whose team managed engineering for the project, said much of the 300 Series success against uneven wear can be attributed to the new tread pattern geometries coupled with a tire casing that maintains a more uniform shape throughout the tire's life cycle.
In addition to casing design improvements and proprietary materials, each 300 Series tire features a high-tensile steel-belt package and in the free-rolling steer and trail entries, a newly designed pressure distribution groove that optimizes the tread footprint pressure in the shoulder area, Yurkovich said.
"The initial life of the 300 Series tires should be extended by the squaring' of the drive and trail tires' footprints, assuming proper maintenance is present," Yurkovich said.
"The new tire footprint design puts a larger portion of the tread more evenly in contact with the ground surface, and the uniform casing helps to assure that the wear is more evenly distributed over the tire's usable life."
The 300 Series Unisteel truck tires will be available in load range G in the four main line-haul sizes.
