GOODYEAR CHAIRMAN SALUTES ONE MILLIONTH AQUATRED

GOODYEAR CHAIRMAN SALUTES ONE MILLIONTH AQUATRED
 UNION CITY, Tenn., Nov. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Goodyear Tire & Rubber's

(NYSE: GT) one millionth Aquatred tire rolled off the assembly line at the company's plant here today with an assist from Goodyear Chairman Stan Gault, the man who helped the water-chasing wet weather tire rocket in popularity in its first year.
Gault met briefly with media during his visit, then proceeded to try his hand at building one of the tires whose radically different appearance comes from a deep water channel in the tread.
Gault told media and plant associates that the success of the Aquatred, first introduced to consumers through a nationwide tour a year ago, was a sign of what to expect from Goodyear in the future.
"To build one million Aquatreds this soon is a tribute to all Goodyear associates. It's amazing when you consider that until now they have been sold only in the replacement market and mostly in North America," Gault said.
"Our associates have demonstrated what it takes to develop, produce and market innovative products that defy the belief that tires are simply a commodity. They are different...and Goodyear is on the cutting edge of that product innovation and differentiation," he added.
In shirt sleeves and a tie, Gault joked that building a tire like the Aquatred was a lot more difficult than selling one.
"When you have a tire like the Aquatred - with performance characteristics so visible - it almost sells itself," Gault said. "From the customers with whom I've talked, and letters I've received, the message is the same. Not only can they see how the tire should perform, they can feel it as well."
Gault also said that others knowledgeable about product innovation share Goodyear's belief that the Aquatred is something special.
"We've received design and marketing awards on the Aquatred from the most respected names in the business - Popular Science, Popular Mechanics, Business Week, Discover and Advertising Age," he said. "The awards are nice, but it's the customer acceptance that pleases us most."
In talking about the tire's rocketing success, Gault said that one million Aquatreds stacked together would stand 125 miles high, roughly the average altitude of an orbiting space shuttle.
"It's something for which we can all stand tall and be proud," Gault said.
