GOODNIGHT JOHN-BOY; Brits hate Waltons but love the Simpsons.

Byline: By Paula Murray

BRITISH film fans have voted the Waltons the worst family in screen history.

The "sickly sweet" lifestyle of the wholesome clan was slammed as a turn-off.

It seems former US president George Bush senior's plea for families to be more like the homely Waltons and less like the dysfunctional Simpsons failed to strike a chord.

Super-slob Homer and his unruly brood were the favourite movie family favourites, despite their big screen adventures only being released late last month.

The Waltons started as a TV series which was screened in Britain during the 1970s and 80s.

It featured the struggles of three generations of poor US family with eight children .

Their story was seen through the eyes of the eldest, John-Boy.

Each episode ended with the family wishing each other goodnight. Six made-for-TV spin-off movies, including A Wedding On Walton's Mountain and A Walton Easter, were made between 1982 and 1997.

But more than one in five of the Brits polled by DVD rental firm Lovefilm rated them the pits.

The Von Trapps from the 1965 film The Sound Of Music, starring Julie Andrews, came a close second.

The beaming Bradys from The Brady Bunch films, based on an old US TV sitcom, took third place in the worst-family chart.

Among the favourites, the spooky Addams Family were voted into second place, while the Hoovers from last year's low-budget hit Little Miss Sunshine took third place.

Lovefilm.com's Fliss White said: "The Simpsons are the archetypal family with flaws.

"They yell, they struggle for money and they're uncommunicative but their family bonds are tighter than Homer's waistband.

"The Waltons and Von Trapps are almost too much to bear for down-to-earth UK film-goers."
