GOLDEN GLOVES MOVES TO FOXWOODS HIGH STAKES BINGO AND CASINO

LEDYARD, Conn., Nov. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The amateur tournament of the boxing world, the Golden Gloves, has moved its Southern New England regional tournament from the Police Athletic League Hall of Fall River Massachusetts to Foxwoods High Stakes Bingo and Casino in Southeastern Connecticut. History is made as this is the first time ever the tournament will be held in Connecticut.
The tournament was born in 1923 when Chicago Sports Editor, Arch Ward, originated the program to help promote amateur boxing. Since then the tournament has grown, breeding regional action whose winners move on to compete in the National Golden Gloves Tournament.
The success Foxwoods offers as a boxing venue and the resurgance of boxing in New England has made the match-up a natural. "Foxwoods has much to offer the Southern New England Golden Gloves Tournament" said Paul Morrissette, organizer of the regional tournament for the past 15 years. "I do not enjoy pulling the tournament from its regional supporters but for the sake of the fighters and the tournaments exposure, it was a decision I had to make."
The tournament will begin Thursday, Jan. 20 and run Thursday Jan. 27, Feb. 3 with the finals, televised on New England Sports Network to be held Friday, Feb. 11, 1994. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the first bout begins at 8 p.m. There will be approximately fifteen bouts per evening, to include all weight classes. Tickets for the event are available through Foxwoods' Box office at, 1-800-PLAY BIG or your local Ticketmaster. Tickets for all preliminary rounds, Jan. 20, 27 and Feb. 3 are $10 general admission and $15 reserved seating. Final round action will be $15 for general admission $20 for reserved seating and season tickets are available for $35 for general admission and $50 for reserved seating.
