Byline: By LUCY BALLINGER Wales on Sunday

Gavin Henson has revealed he is sick of his celebrity status. The 23-year-old British Lion told Wales on Sunday he can't wait to fly Down Under to escape the media spotlight because it has become 'too intense'.

His profile has soared ever since his match-winning kick against England in the Six Nations and he started dating Charlotte Church. Wherever he goes, the paparazzi follows.

Speaking after winning the Welsh Rugby Players' Association Fans' Player of the Year Award - voted for by WoS readers - the Pencoed Osprey said: 'I can't wait to get over there.

'I have been to New Zealand before, they love rugby.

'I don't know what the attention will be like, but it will be good getting away from everything here.

'The press attention, paparazzi and everyday life in general is all a bit too intense at the moment.'

While he's dreading being apart from his new love, Gavin said he will be counting down the days until she visits him in New Zealand.

And until then, he's got an advance copy of her new album Tissues and Issues on his personal stereo.

The spiky-haired superstar Gav: 'I do like her new single, it's really good. She just gave me a CD with all her songs on, and I've put it onto my iPod, so I'm looking forward to listening to them all over New Zealand.

'It's not good being away from Charlotte for so long, but I think she's going to come over half way through the tour.

'I'm sure I will be going away with her in the summer so I'm looking forward to that too.'

But for now Gav is focusing on the Lions tour and getting back into training after a groin injury.

He said: 'It's pretty disappointing that I'm not in the team for Monday.

'But it's great getting this award, it's the best award to win.

'I aim to please the fans and try to excite, and I hope to win it again next year.'
