GOLD MEDAL DIETS SUPPORT OLYMPIANS; WEEK ONE: 500,000 MEALS
BARCELONA, Spain, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- As many Olympic athletes have fulfilled their dreams of attaining the gold, ARA has fulfilled their nutritional needs.
ARA Services, the official food service manager of the games, has been in Barcelona overseeing the mammoth food operation for the 15,000 athletes and coaches -- about 60,000 times a day.
During the first week of the 1992 Summer Olympic Games, ARA Services managed the food service of nearly one-half million meals to the athletes, coaches and judges. The most popular food items requested at the games during the first week included: scrambled eggs, assorted cold cereals, pasta and rice. Consistent with ARA philosophy of providing the most nutritional diets in all of its operations worldwide, in the first week ARA served balanced meals with approximately 250,000 pounds of meat and poultry, 275,000 pounds of fruit, 55,000 loaves of bread and 25,000 gallons of milk.
Providing food service for the Olympics is a tradition for ARA Services. For 24 years, ARA has been the proud food service manager of the Olympic Games. This Olympic experience helps ARA meet the tastes and requirements of all the athletes from the 165 competing nations in Barcelona.
"Athletes depend on ARA's consistency in providing the best and most nutritious food throughout the games," said John Scanlan, ARA vice president and project manager for the Barcelona Olympics. "From our past Olympic experiences, we've learned that there are always surprises, and this year was no different. This week we got requests for more cimchi, a spicy Korean vegetable dish that was already on the menu and wasn't expected to be so popular. Of course we filled these requests. Our goal is to please everyone."
ARA dietitians have adapted the Olympic menu to meet the changing diet of the athletes since the company's first Olympic Games in 1968. During the 1992 Summer Games in Barcelona, when low-fat, higher protein and varied grains are more popular training foods, ARA broadened the menu selection to reflect this with items ranging from rice nicoise salad to red fish with green pepper to Indian chicken tikka. By the close of the games, ARA said it expects to serve nearly 2.5 million meals.
ARA Services is a privately held, international, diversified service management company with nearly $5 billion in annual sales.
