GNP Computers' SerialSmart to support 64 remote access users of Lotus Notes Release 4; multiport serial device was a working dial-in solution tested to run Lotus Notes v3.3 on Sun.

a leading manufacturer of telecommunications servers and commercial communications products for RISC workstations, Thursday announced that its multiport serial device for Sun workstations, SerialSmart, will support the new Lotus Notes Release 4 with up to 64 remote access users.

SerialSmart has been tested with Notes Release 4 and will now support from 16 to 64 simultaneous dial-in users. SerialSmart was also tested to successfully provide dial-in access for Lotus Notes version 3.3.

SerialSmart was demonstrated as a dial-in access server for Lotus Notes Release 4 at the Lotusphere '96, Lotus' third annual business and developers conference, Jan. 21-25.

Serial Smart is transparent to host applications and provides multiple modem ports for remote access. In addition, SerialSmart is designed with an "intelligent" co-processor on the SBus adapter card which allows the SPARCstation to use minimal CPU processing power to manage the serial devices.

SerialSmart, an asynchronous communications device, also provides high-availability serial communications for other applications including banking, publishing and telecommunications.

"With this new release, SerialSmart has doubled its capacity for remote access, and we are very pleased to have GNP Computers as a partner," said Steve Sayre, vice president of Communications Products Marketing at Lotus Development. "SerialSmart further extends the inherent mobile user support of Notes."

SerialSmart is available with 16, 32, 48 or 64 ports per SBus card. Individual ports can be configured to baud rates as high as 230.4Kbaud per port with hardware and software flow control. The product supports SunOS 4.1.3 and Solaris 2.3 or greater.
