GM SALUTES 'WORLDWIDE SUPPLIERS OF THE YEAR'
DETROIT, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) today announced that 246 supplier companies have been selected as the corporation's "Worldwide Suppliers of the Year." This is GM's first worldwide supplier awards program to recognize companies for their excellence in quality, service and price -- the three key competitive success factors used in GM's sourcing strategy. GM also selected The Valeo Group, a Paris, France-based automotive supplier, as the 1992 Corporation of the Year. "GM Worldwide Purchasing is recognizing these companies for demonstrating their commitment to work with us, and for their creativity and aggressiveness in meeting the competitive challenges we face together," said J.I. Lopez de Arriortua, vice president and group executive in charge of GM's Worldwide Purchasing Group. "GM is grateful to them for helping us to achieve our vision of 'exciting products and enthusiastic customers, created by people working together to win.'" These "Quality, Service, Price" (Q.S.P.) awards will be presented to suppliers Saturday (March 6) when this international gathering convenes at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Mich. Awards will be given to the best suppliers of specific products or services in the following areas: metallic, electrical, chemical, machinery and equipment, sales and marketing, and indirect material and services. The companies recognized were selected by teams of purchasing, quality and engineering professionals from GM operations around the world -- including North American Operations, GM Europe, Latin American Operations, Asian-Pacific Operations, the Automotive Components Group, and Saab. These teams review suppliers' performance in quality, service and price using a number of criteria. They evaluated the Targets for Excellence/Mark of Excellence assessment scores in quality. They also reviewed suppliers' actual performance in quality and delivery. In addition, consideration was given to the supplier's commitment to customer satisfaction and its participation in PICOS workshops, value engineering and proactive quality improvement and cost reduction activities. The Valeo Group was selected by GM as the "Corporation of the Year" for overall excellence in quality, service and price. "Valeo has consistently applied quality improvements and cost reduction programs and techniques for the past two years," said Mr. Lopez. "They have demonstrated a strong willingness to work with us." "This award from GM is a great encouragement to Valeo employees in their pursuit of continuous improvement in product quality, technical innovations and customer service," said Noel Goutard, Valeo's chairman and chief executive officer. The predecessor to the GM "Worldwide Suppliers of the Year" awards was the GM "European Suppliers of the Year" program, a mainstay at GM Europe for many years. Last May, GM integrated all of its purchasing activities around the world into one group -- GM Worldwide Purchasing -- and began implementing a global sourcing strategy. This is one of five key strategies for the corporation. With this new purchasing organization and strategies in place, GM restructured the supplier awards program -- and raised the benchmark of excellence to a global level -- to give recognition to the best suppliers in the world.
