GM RENEWS ARMED FORCES SPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS SPONSORSHIP
DETROIT, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) has

renewed its title sponsorship of the 1992 Armed Forces Sports Championships (AFSC) with the largest corporate contribution for a military-sanctioned athletic event in history.
During ceremonies at the recent AFSC Boxing Championships at Fort Huachuca in Sierra Vista, Ariz., Bernard Johnston, GM's national marketing manager, presented a check for $160,000 to Brig. Gen. Raymond Roe, commanding general of the Community Family Support Center (Washington, D.C.). This is GM's second consecutive year as title sponsor of the AFSC.
"General Motors, its vehicle divisions, and General Motors Acceptance Corporation have found our partnership with the AFSC to be nothing short of terrific," said Philip Guarascio, executive-in-charge of GM corporate marketing and advertising.
"Our AFSC sponsorship is the most efficient way for GM to target messages about our technology, people and products to the millions of men and women who serve in the U.S. military," Guarascio added.
GM's AFSC sponsorship fee will be used by the military to help pay for athletic equipment and to help defray administrative costs associated with the competitions. GM will also provide advertising and promotional support at individual AFSC events, as well as sponsor GM Sportsmanship Awards for deserving soldier-athletes or teams.
"Establishing a partnership with a quality sponsor like General Motors means a great deal to the AFSC and the men and women who compete in our athletic programs," said Philip Cota, director of the Armed Forces Sports Committee, governing body of the military sports program.
"GM has bent over backwards to meet the strict standards and requirements of the military branches," Cota added. "We hope to continue our strong relationship with them for many years."
The AFSC competitions, which were inaugurated in 1948, are the culmination of athletic activity at all four branches of the service -- Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps. The AFSC events are timed to precede the national amateur championships of various sports throughout the year.
From the estimated 200,000 service men and women who compete in various military sports activities, about 1,100 athletes are selected for the prestigious AFSC interservice competition.
The 1992 AFSC season features 18 championship events, including boxing, soccer, wrestling, bowling, volleyball, racquetball, track and field, softball, golf, tennis and basketball. The competitions are held at military bases across the country (a 1992 AFSC schedule is below).
The 1992 AFSC season kicked off Feb. 2 at Fort Huachuca with the boxing competition. The Army captured the overall team championship by winning seven of 12 title bouts. Marine Corps Lance Corporal Sergio Reyes was the recipient of the GM Sportsmanship Award. The boxing championships were broadcast by the Armed Forces Television Network to more than 2 million U.S. military personnel in 70 countries.
In a separate military promotion, GM has implemented a special $400 incentive for all active U.S.-based military personnel and their spouses who buy or lease eligible GM cars and light trucks through Sept. 30, 1992. The special $400 offer is in addition to any general public discounts available from GM or its divisions at time of purchase, excluding GM's college graduate, first-time buyer or overseas vehicle purchase plans.
GM's Chevrolet, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick and GMC Truck divisions are participating in this special $400 military offer.
