GM REACTION TO CANADIAN AGREEMENT

DETROIT, Sept. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- GENERAL MOTORS (NYSE: GM) STATEMENT ATTRIBUTABLE TO GERALD A. KNECHTEL, VICE PRESIDENT OF NORTH AMERICAN OPERATIONS (NAO) PERSONNEL, REGARDING THE TENTATIVE AGREEMENT BETWEEN GM OF CANADA LTD. AND THE CANADIAN AUTO WORKERS (CAW) UNION:
"General Motors is pleased that GM of Canada, Ltd., and the Canadian Automobile Workers (CAW) reached a contract agreement without a strike. We are also pleased that the agreement provides for important gains in operational flexibility at the local level.
"We have approached our negotiations in Canada and in the United States with recognition of important differences in underlying economics, as well as in the provisions of our labor agreements with the CAW and the United Automobile Workers. The agreements are substantially different in all major areas, including: wage treatment, job and income security provisions, health care and pensions. Furthermore, GM's unfunded pension liability is considerably less in Canada than that attributable to the U.S. and, of course, Canada has a national health care system that generates a totally different equation for health care costs.
"These differences are important to our objectives of improving GM's overall competitiveness in both countries."
