GM MIDSIZE CAR DIVISION'S FAIRFAX PLANT TO ADD SECOND SHIFT

KANSAS CITY, Kan., June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced plans today to add a second shift of operations and return to work about 900 laid-off employees by the end of January 1994, when 1994 Pontiac Grand Prix production accelerates here at its Midsize Car Division (MCD) Fairfax assembly plant.
"We're enthusiastic about the '94 model year," said Plant Manager Troy Clarke, "and we're going to be producing the best cars we've ever built for our Pontiac customers."
"We expect to sell every Grand Prix the Fairfax team can deliver," noted Pontiac Division General Manager John G. Middlebrook. "The car line is coming off one of its most successful spring selling seasons in years. Add to this the '94 product enhancements and the market opportunities next year, and the Grand Prix future looks very bright."
The plant has been operating on one shift since March of 1992 when production volume was adjusted and the second shift was placed on indefinite layoff. MCD Fairfax currently employs approximately 2,300 people.
