GM EXECUTIVE COMMENTS ON APRIL SALES RESULTS

DETROIT, May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Following are comments by J. Michael Losh, vice president and group executive for Vehicle Sales, Service and Marketing, GM North American Operations, on April sales results:
At the end of March, 1993, our optimism for a strong sales picture in the second quarter and beyond, rested upon having a good spring selling season. By all accounts, April sales, which were up almost 11 percent over the same period last year, have strengthened our optimism.
Truck sales continue their year-long torrid pace with a 9.1 percent increase for the last 10 days of April and are up a full 19.0 percent for the month over 1992. Both Chevrolet and GMC trucks enjoyed the best April sales period in their history. For the calendar year, truck sales are up an impressive 17.1 percent over last year.
Just as important is the upward trend in passenger car sales -- especially those to retail customers.
For the final 10 days in April, passenger car sales were up 8.4 percent over the same period last year. For the month of April, passenger car sales increased 6.3 percent versus last year. Also in April, retail sales of passenger cars were up some 14.4 percent while our sales to fleets declined 9.1 percent. This is in line with our plan.
Led by Chevrolet, Cadillac and Saturn, General Motors made outstanding improvements during the April sales period. With an estimated 36.8 percent passenger car market share, April represents our strongest performance since last July.
We remain convinced that the value pricing initiatives we undertook at the start of the 1993 model year are now beginning to pay dividends in increased sales. By not following the lead of our major competitors with broad price increases, we believe more and more consumers are realizing that GM products are a truly outstanding value.
