GM ELECTRO-MOTIVE SIGNS $700 MILLION CONTRACT WITH AUSTRALIA

LA GRANGE, Ill., April 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors (NYSE: GM) announced today a $700 million (Australian dollars) contract with the State Rail Authority (SRA) of New South Wales, Australia for a unique package which combines new locomotives with the industry's first overseas application of a full service contract maintenance program for new locomotives.
"In the early 1980s, the SRA was the first overseas railroad to purchase EMD's `Super Series' advanced traction locomotives, establishing them as a leader in applying new technology," said John Jarrell, vice president of General Motors and general manager of Electro-Motive. "As part of this contract, the SRA is again taking a leadership position by being the first overseas railroad to purchase EMD's contract maintenance program along with an order for new locomotives."
Electro-Motive, in partnership with its longtime Australian licensee Clyde Engineering, will deliver 89 new locomotives to the SRA beginning in early
1994. Thirty-one of the locomotives, the 4000 horsepower

GT46CW model, will be assembled complete in EMD's London, Ontario, Canada plant. These locomotives will incorporate many of EMD's latest technological advances, including the 16-cylinder 710G3A engine, the new EM2000 microprocessor locomotive control system and an acoustically isolated cab which dramatically lowers noise levels inside the locomotive cab.
The additional 58 locomotives, the 3000 horsepower JT42C model, will be built in Australia by Clyde Engineering, utilizing major components supplied by EMD's La Grange manufacturing facility. It will incorporate a 12-cylinder 710G3A engine with a dual cab configuration.
The unique feature of this contract is the 15-year full service contract maintenance program. This program will be provided by the EMD/Clyde team in a new 63,00-square-foot facility Clyde is constructing on Kooragang Island in Newcastle. Under this concept, EMD and Clyde will be responsible for all maintenance activities related to the locomotives, guaranteeing high levels of reliability, performance and availability. This allows the SRA to concentrate on providing transportation services while being assured of a steady supply of efficient, productive motive power. Although EMD has been successfully operating contract maintenance programs with U.S. railroads for seven years, this is the first program of its kind to be sold with new locomotives overseas.
"This order will add to the already extensive fleet of more that have been delivered to Australia through the 45-year partnership between EMD and Clyde," said Jarrell. "The addition of contract maintenance adds an exciting new dimension to our presence in Australia and represents an important step forward in assuring that our international customers can get the most out of their EMD locomotives."
Electro-Motive has been the world's largest producer of Diesel electric locomotives for more than 70 years. Electro-Motive is located in the Chicago area with major manufacturing facilities in La Grange, Ill., and London, Ontario, Canada.
