GM ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALLS

 GM ANNOUNCES SAFETY RECALLS
DETROIT, July 24 /PRNewswire/ -- General Motors (NYSE: GM) said

today it is conducting three recalls to correct certain safety-related conditions on several different models of passenger cars.
The first recall involves about 250,000 1991-92 model Chevrolet Caprice and Buick Roadmaster sedans and station wagons and Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser station wagons. The shoulder belt guide loop is covered with a thermoplastic material which may crack, exposing the steel sub- plate underneath. In the event of a collision, the webbing of the shoulder belt could be severed and increase the potential for injury. General Motors dealers will replace the shoulder belt guide loop free of charge.
The second recall involves approximately 215,000 1990-92 Geo Storm models. When subjected to certain types of frontal crashes, the steering wheel hub could fracture, reducing the driver's ability to control the vehicle, and diminishing the crash protection of the steering system and driver side airbag. Geo dealers will install a reinforcing plate on the steering wheel hub to remedy the condition.
The third action involves 37,000 1991 and 1992 Caprice Police vehicles equipped with certain steel wheels. Fatigue cracks may develop around the circumference of the lug nut mounting circle. The severe operating environment police vehicles experience often involves frequent tire changes and mounting and dismounting of wheels on the cars. Under certain conditions, tire mounting equipment and over-torquing of the wheel lug nuts can promote the wheel fatigue cracks. Dealers or police garages will replace the wheels with a modified design wheel, and a different style lug nut.
